Investigators worked late into the night, piecing together the events that led to the deaths of nine people at the shopping centre.

Anxious relatives of people still missing after the shooting gathered near the scene overnight.

Police say first reports of a shooting in Hanauer Street came in just before 18:00 (16:00 GMT). People were seen fleeing the scene shortly afterwards.

Officials confirmed there were nine deaths at Munich's Olympia shopping centre and 16 wounded. The motive remains unclear.

The shopping centre is in the north-western Moosach suburb of the city.

One resident described how people ran into the mall screaming and shoppers were told to go to the fifth floor.

Police initially thought three attackers were responsible but later said a single gunman had acted alone.

The suspect is an 18-year-old German-Iranian dual national who lived in Munich. He was not known to police and had no links with terror groups.

The Bavarian capital's central railway station was evacuated while armed police were deployed.

An elite border security unit, GSG9, arrived in Munich to help in the operation.

The evacuation of the shopping centre took several hours.

German security forces have been on alert since a teenage migrant stabbed and injured five people on a train in Bavaria on Monday, in an attack claimed by so-called Islamic State.
