Gardaí (Irish police) suspect that the shooting of a 45-year-old man in Dublin on Friday night could be linked to a drugs dispute.

Father of two Robert Sheridan was shot dead after he answered the door at his home at Poppintree Crescent, Ballymun at around 23.15 local time.

Two gunmen escaped on foot after the shooting.

The scene of the attack remains cordoned off as forensic and technical examinations get under way.

The body of the deceased has been removed to the City Morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Speaking from the scene of the incident, superintendent Brain Daly said the gunmen escaped on foot.

"It's understood two armed men involved in the incident left the scene on foot and entered Poppintree Park before exiting onto Willow Park road," he said.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area between 22:00 and 24:00 to contact us here at the incident room at Ballymun Garda Station."
