The body of a newborn baby has been found on a beach near Dublin in the Republic of Ireland.

A volunteer who was cleaning the area found the remains at Bell's Beach, Balbriggan, north of the city shortly before 10:00 local time on Saturday.

Gardaí (Irish police) have made an urgent appeal for the mother to come forward.

At a press conference, Sergeant Fiona Savidge said she believes the mother needs urgent medical attention.

Police said that because of the position the baby was in, and because it was partially buried they do not yet know whether it is a girl or a boy.
