A teenage boy has died and a search operation continues for another after they got into difficulty at Enagh Lough, close to Londonderry, BBC News NI understands.

Emergency services remain at the scene after the operation began at about 18:30 BST.

SDLP MLA Mark Durkan said it was an "absolute tragedy".

The Ambulance Service said two people had been taken to Altnagelvin Hospital, while roads in the area remain closed.

Police said Temple Road was cordoned off as it dealt with an ongoing incident.

Foyle Search and Rescue and fire crews have also attended the scene.

Mr Durkan said he understood there was a group of boys who had gone out for a cycle in the area and a couple of them went for a swim in the lough.

"It's my understanding from talking to some of the boys that one of them got into difficulty in the water," he said.

"His friend tried to help him and he ended up in equal difficulty.

"Sadly now we're looking at a situation where one of those young boys has lost his life and the search continues for the other."
