Guernsey sees increase in island recycling

Recycling has increased on the island, according to the States of Guernsey.

Between April and June this year 48.8% of domestic waste was recycled compared to 39.1 % in the first quarter of 2010.

It is hoped that by the end of the year, 44.4% or 11,000 tonnes of island waste will be recycled, compared to 36.5% or 8,800 tonnes last year.

Deputy Minister of Public Services Scott Ogier said: "We have to look wherever we can to reduce waste as well as to reuse and recycle."

The biggest increase in recycling was seen in garden waste with more processed in the first six months of this year compared to the whole of 2009.

Deputy Scott Ogier said: "We saw at the end of last year a marked increase in recycling and that has continued into 2010.

"Part of the challenge that faces us is to work towards generating less waste in the first place."
