States members have endorsed a call for a full review of Guernsey's government's finances.

Deputy Matt Fallaize said the States needed to identify ways of balancing its books.

Treasury and Resources was tasked with bringing a report to the States next year, with ideas for raising additional revenue and cutting expenditure.

Deputy Fallaize said it was a simple and straightforward request.

He said: "I do not think it is too much for this assembly to ask the Policy Council to report back by the July of next year with outlined plans for dealing with a budget deficit, which was first identified many years ago.

"We must commit ourselves to leaving our successors with a more favourable fiscal environment than we are operating in at the moment."
