Channel Islands Air Search was called out on Monday by French coastguards after they received reports of a red flare being sighted.
The Lion's Pride searched 120 sq miles between Guernsey, Alderney and France after the call at 0845 GMT.
With nothing to report, the search was stood down and the Lion's Pride returned to Guernsey at midday.
Search director Jason Hobbs said two helicopters and a number of surface vessels were involved in the search.
