Alderney's Renewable Energy Commission head retires

One of the men behind the development of tidal power in Alderney has announced his retirement.

Dr John Anthill has been chairman of the Alderney Renewable Energy Commission for 18 months and has worked for the organisation for seven years.

He was praised for his "diligence" and "commitment" to tidal power.

The island has one of the largest potential tidal power resources in Europe, according to Alderney Renewable Energy Ltd.

A project is under way to install tidal turbines to generate cheap electricity for islanders and to export abroad.

John Beam, chairman of the Policy and Finance Committee, said: "Dr Anthill has been involved with and latterly overseen the work of the commission through several very important phases of the development of tidal power in Alderney's waters.

"Without his diligence and undoubted commitment the project would not have been able to progress."
