Guernsey residents urged to engage in population debate

A Guernsey politician has urged islanders to contribute to a public consultation about the island's future population policy.

Deputy Gloria Dudley-Owen said it was "one of the most important" consultations islanders would ever be involved in.

The Population Policy Group has said population policy needs to change.

Guernsey's population is currently capped at about 60,000.

Deputy Dudley-Owen said: "The consultation affects [islanders'] futures and their families' futures.

"Let's all put our backs into it and get on with it."

Last week Deputy Geoff Mahy, a member of the Population Policy Group, said current population legislation needed to change to avoid possible legal challenges from people wanting to immigrate to Guernsey.
