Emergency advice leaflets sent to Guernsey homes

Leaflets on how to deal with major emergencies are going to be delivered to every home in Guernsey.

The Home Department is distributing credit card sized advice booklets to all postal addresses in the island.

Catherine Veron, emergency planning officer, said the biggest risks to the island were a flu type epidemic or a major flood in low lying areas.

She said: "Swine flu last year didn't turn out as bad as predicted, but it's still one of our highest risks."

Mrs Veron said: "Also on our island surrounded by the sea coastal flooding is one of the higher risks on the risk register.

"This leaflet helps raise public awareness about small measures the individual can take as well as what the island does from a government perspective to minimise the risk."
