The States of Guernsey has agreed to spend £405,000 on a new learning and skills centre at the island's prison.

The Home Department said creating the centre at Les Nicolles would allow prisoners to improve their education and work skills.

Deputy Jenny Tasker, from the department said that would help reduce the rate of re-offending.

She said giving prisoners the skills to find jobs after they have served their time was something to work towards.
