Deputy Gollop said Alderney residents should have the same voting rights

A Guernsey politician has called for the possibility of extending the right to vote in island-wide elections to the people of Alderney to be explored.

Currently two Alderney States members sit in the States of Guernsey with the right to vote on all decisions.

Guernsey States is due to discuss various proposals to change the current system of island elections this week.

Deputy John Gollop said if a form of island-wide voting was approved it should be extended to Alderney.

He said: "Alderney people benefit and contribute financially through Social Security and Income Tax to the same level of public services that we have in Guernsey.

"I'm suggesting the States Assembly and Constitution Committee look into the feasiblity and desirability of extending the franchise to Alderney people in the event of us going for some form of island-wide elections."
