Staff concerned that Guernsey pre-school may close

Staff at a Guernsey pre-school said they are concerned that it may have to close down.

Sian Simpson, from Happy Days pre-school, said if a new site cannot be found it would not re-open in September.

She said the school was asked to relocate to make way for a redevelopment of the Brock Road site.

Happy Days is a pre-school for low income families and is run by Guernsey's Welfare Service.

Ms Simpson said parents whose children attended the school had told them they were concerned about the price of childcare in Guernsey.

Meanwhile Social Security Department member Deputy Andrew Le Lievre said he hoped there were systems in place in Guernsey to provide childcare opportunities to everyone.

He agreed that the Guernsey Welfare Service-run pre-school is probably the only option on offer to families who are not so well off.

He said it was an area which he believed all departments should give careful consideration to and said his department should meet with the Education Department to consider the problem.
