Forty glass fibre donkeys have been brought to Guernsey, as part of a decorative fund-raising event.

The Guernsey Adult Literacy Project has arranged to hand them over to local artists, who will paint them and put them on display around the island.

The director of the charity said the idea was inspired by a similar event in London in 2010.

The entire collection will be put on display on St Peter Port's Crown Pier on Sunday, 3 July.

Charity director Trevor Wakefield said: "When deciding on what kind of animal to use, it was obvious it should be the donkey - proud, stubborn and fiercely independent."

Artists such as Peter Le Vasseur and Liz Adams are among those who will paint the donkeys but schools and community groups will also be involved in the decoration.
