Guernsey Health Department to pursue 2020 vision

Guernsey's politicians have given their unanimous approval for the Health and Social Services Department to redefine the way healthcare is provided.

The department put forward a 10-year vision for healthcare, warning current methods and funding were unsustainable.

Health Minister Hunter Adam said: "We're looking at what will be required to provide adequate and affordable care in the years up to 2020 and beyond.

"Plus what steps are needed to get there."

He said: "They must include collaboration with other departments."

Chief Minister Lyndon Trott warned that funding healthcare in the future would mean islanders would have to pay more in taxes.

He said with an expected increase in the proportion of the population dependent on government assistance, eventually the States would be forced to bring in more revenue from taxpayers.

The proposals will cover health care in Guernsey, Alderney and Herm.
