Housing to cause no delay to new slaughterhouse project

Plans to put temporary worker accommodation on the site of the new slaughterhouse should not affect its development, the States has said.

The Public Services Department has asked for permission to house those working on the airport runway project at Longue Hougue for up to two years.

Commerce and Employment is due to unveil plans for the new slaughterhouse this summer.

It said the temporary housing would cause no delay to the project.

The department said it was currently looking to appoint an expert to help with the design process of the new facility.

The building of the new slaughterhouse was set out as a top priority for Commerce and Employment for 2011, as the existing facility is due to be closed for environmental health reasons in 2012.

The current facility cannot fully meet upcoming changes to food handling regulations.
