Letterbox appeal used for Guernsey's North Show funding

Heavy rain did not stop the entertainment, but did lead to a decrease in revenue from 2010's North Show

Fundraisers for Guernsey's North Show have appealed to every household to help pay for the event.

Envelopes were sent to 29,000 properties around the island asking for a donation of £1 per person.

Stuart Wilson, North Show committee treasurer, said without the cash next year's show would not happen and even if only a few supported the appeal, it would help.

Mr Wilson said the cost of staging the show is about £100,000.

The envelope idea was raised by one of the show committee members.

Reserve funds

"It's come to fruition, and we'll see if it works," Mr Wilson told BBC News.

"It's not going to please everybody."

In 2010, reserve funds were used to stage the show, which suffered a drop in revenue after heavy rain hit the site.

The securing of a sponsor in December 2010 helped to fund the 2011 North Show.

The annual festival is held in Saumarez Park in the Castel parish, and hosts the island's Battle of Flowers event.
