Cumbria and Guernsey hotels most expensive in British Isles

The most expensive hotel accommodation in the British Isles can be found in Cumbria and the Channel Islands, according to a survey.

Bowness-on-Windermere in Cumbria was found by a bookings agency to have the highest average room rate for the first six months of 2011 at £134.

St Peter Port in Guernsey was second at £115, followed by London (£113), Bath (£112) and Jersey (£110).

The average across the British Isles was £82, down by 1% on a year earlier.

The average price in Guernsey prices rose in the same period by 4%, Jersey's by 6% and London by 3%, while there was no change in Bath and Bowness-on-Windermere.

The figures were calculated by averaging the total price of bookings made by customers to the company's website.

Matt Walls, hotels.com vice president, said: "An influx of visitors from mainland Europe and the UK has kept the hotel sector on Guernsey and Jersey in a healthy state.

"The [overall] sector was boosted by the relative weakness of sterling, which led to an influx of foreign visitors."
