Guernsey's bees escape the American foulbrood disease

Bees in Guernsey have avoided being harmed by the American foulbrood disease that affected Jersey.

Guernsey's Commerce and Employment department and bee inspectors surveyed hives in the island twice after the disease was found in Jersey in 2010.

The department said all inspections had returned negative results but that a third of hives will be monitored annually for pests and general health.

Meanwhile, hives in Jersey have continued to be affected.

American foulbrood affects honeybee larvae, and can remain present in bee-keeping equipment for some years.
