Guernsey political candidates could face questions

Guernsey politicians standing for senior positions in the States could face questions from fellow members in future, if deputies agree.

It is one of a number of changes to the current internal election rules being proposed by the States Assembly and Constitution Committee.

If agreed the changes would apply to the election of chief minister, deputy chief minister, ministers and chairmen.

Under the plans each deputy would be allowed one question to each candidate.

The committee has also suggested those who propose a candidate no longer speak and candidate's speech time limits are increased from five to 10 minutes.

In its report the committee said the changes should help members to get a better understanding of candidate's views on the policy areas covered by the post they were standing for.

The proposals are due to be debated in December.
