Unicef accreditation given to Guernsey hospital

Guernsey's Princess Elizabeth Hospital (PEH) has been given "Baby Friendly" accreditation from Unicef.

An assessor from the group spent two days at the hospital and praised its maternity and neonatal staff highly.

The maternity and neonatal units received 100% marks in most of the 10 steps needed for the accreditation.

Head of midwifery Helen Kelso said the assessor had told her it was rare to gain 100% for some steps.

Unicef aims to provide emergency food and health care for children around the world.

Its "Baby Friendly" initiative began in 1992 and encourages maternity hospitals to promote successful breastfeeding.
