Alderney breakwater damaged by storms

Mr Webster said repairs would go ahead when the weather allowed

Engineers are monitoring Alderney's breakwater after storms sheared off a 50m section of cladding.

The protective skin is designed to keep the weather from damaging the internal structure of the Victorian harbour.

Alderney harbour manager Keith Webster said: "Although the damage looks quite bad the actual structure of the breakwater is untouched.

"The weather is unfortunately deteriorating but we've secured the edges of the damage."

He said: "We're just hoping the weather allows us to get there perhaps in the New Year and carry out some further repairs, but we're totally dependent on the weather."

Work on the breakwater began in 1847 and it was completed in 1864 at the cost of about £1.3m.
