Guernsey States urges people to recycle Christmas trees

The States of Guernsey's recycling officer has said she hopes more Christmas trees will be recycled this festive season.

Tina Norman-Ross said: "Last year we collected a staggering 6,500 trees which beat our previous record by 500.

"I'm hoping our 2011 figures will meet last year's peak or be even higher."

Trees can be dropped off at five sites around the island until the middle of January and will be turned into wood chips and used as mulch in parks.

The sites are Earlswood, Queux Patio Plants and Le Friquet garden centres, Burnt Lane in St Martin and the Longue Hougue Waste Recycling Facility.

Mrs Norman-Ross said artificial trees could not be recycled but suggested that if they were in reasonable condition they could be found a new home through charity shops, Ecycle or BBC Guernsey's ring and buy.
