An £11m upgrade to Guernsey's main sewage treatment plant has been approved by the States.

Due to get under way in January, the 17-month project involves building new inlet works and a stormwater storage facility at Belle Greve Bay.

Public Services Department officials said the current plant was 40 years old and repairs had become lengthy and expensive.

The project and its budget were unanimously approved by deputies.
