Parade leader wants Bailiwick of Guernsey memorial move

Moving the Bailiwick of Guernsey war memorial has been suggested by the Remembrance Day Parade's commander.

Major Bob Place said the site at the top of Smith Street, in St Peter Port, was enclosed by buildings making it hard for spectators to see the parade.

He said: "The spectators are downhill behind the parade and they see very, very little."

He added that being at the top of a hill the slope was also difficult for some people to walk up.

Major Place said: "I think if we are going to have a parade to commemorate the servicemen and women who have been before us we should do that in a grand style and have as many people as we can."

Suggestions for resiting the memorial range from rotating it 180 degrees so it faces a flat open area of space, to moving the memorial to North Beach, where there are several other World War II memorials.

Memorial services on Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday have taken place at the site for more than 80 years.
