Cash prizes have been announced as an incentive for completing tax returns online in Guernsey.

The island's Income Tax Office is offering prizes of £2,500, £1,500 and £1,000, to be drawn in December.

Rob Gray, the Director of Income Tax, said by filling returns in online, people could help the department save money on postage, stationery and time.

He said: "Any time saved would be diverted to dealing with existing queries... much more quickly."

He added that resources could also be diverted to tackling with tax evasion and tax avoidance, which would in turn increase tax revenue for the island.

Mr Gray said that the online system was introduced in 2008 at a cost of £250,000, and that a budget of £150,000 has been set aside for enhancements.
