Guernsey's fishermen miss out on EU safety grant

New EU funding aimed at increasing safety measures for fishermen will not be available to Guernsey workers.

Dougal Lane, president of the Guernsey Fisherman's Association, said the island did not qualify as it lies outside of EU jurisdiction.

The funding was secured by Sheryll Murray, a Cornwall MP, and will help fishermen pay for emergency winch stop buttons to be installed on vessels.

Mr Lane said fishing could be extremely dangerous.

He said: "Anything on a fishing boat will rip your arm off or kill you if you get it wrong."

However, he said money towards the buttons, which cost up to £1,300, would not be received, and added: "We don't get any EU funding at all."

Mr Lane also added that fishing had been made difficult in recent times by the fall in the value of the Euro and the rising price of fuel.
