Guernsey primary schools reviewed by Denis Mulkerrin

A review of Guernsey primary education will be carried out by former head teacher Denis Mulkerrin, the island's Education Department has announced.

Mr Mulkerrin was behind the review of secondary education services, which found a lack of accountability.

Education Minister Robert Sillars said they had decided it would be beneficial to undertake a similar review of the primary sector.

He said data gathering for the review had already begun.

Deputy Sillars said: "Mr Mulkerrin will be assisted by Trevor Grayland, a well respected retired local primary head teacher, and Tim Tatham a highly regarded primary specialist from England."

The scope of the review will include literary and numeracy levels, the effectiveness of performance setting, assessment and independent evaluation, and the processes and policies of releasing information to the public.

It will also look at the effectiveness of the transition between pre-school, primary and secondary education.
