Ten candidates in the St Peter Port South District are seeking election to the States of Guernsey on 18 April.

A total of 3,123 islanders have signed up on the electoral roll for the district, with six seats available.

Every voter has six votes, equal to the number of seats, and can choose to use as many or as few as they wish.

In 2008 a total of 7,730 votes were cast by 1,697 voters, with the average person using 4.6 of their votes. At that election 14 candidates stood, three more than in 2004.

We gave each St Peter Port South candidate 100 words to express why you should vote for them and offered them the chance to record up to a minute of speech. Here is what they said:

Barry Brehaut: One-minute manifesto

Dear Elector

As a community there is still a great deal we have yet to do, from a compliant tax structure through to an appropriate modern mental health facility.

I believe we can achieve much, but with a smaller assembly, accountable processes and real open government.

As Chair of Scrutiny I have tried to make the process more accessible through open hearings and meetings, difficult decisions require input from real public engagement.

The next four years will be no less difficult than the last, please be assured I will represent you in a balanced, fair and committed manner.

Thank you.

Hugh Bygott-Webb: One-minute manifesto

The next four years will be a challenging time for Guernsey.

We need to establish our place in the world in the face of scrutiny by our powerful neighbours.

With my wife Marguerite, I live in the heart of town.

Here are some new policy ideas:

• Honours for Guernsey - Citizenship awards as part of the criteria for local licensing.

• A monetary authority for the Channel Islands - a key to greater autonomy. This would enable us to borrow to invest in tidal power and provide free energy for horticulture.

• Regeneration of La Valette - A lido for Guernsey

I will be a full-time Deputy and work hard for the people of Guernsey.

I am opposed to:

• Borrowing.

• Spending more and taxing more.

I am in favour of:

• Maintaining our economy by taxing fairly and spending wisely.

• Eliminating the deficit.

• Protecting vital services.

• Prioritising spending on what we need rather than what we have always done.

• More help for older people to maintain their independence.

• An affordable and fair system of assistance for the less well off.

• Controlling population.

• Open government and full accountability for deputies.

Neil Forman Neil Forman

Neil Forman: One-minute manifesto

I am a 41-year-old born and bred Guernseyman.

I would like to bring common sense and a good work ethic to the States, I will work tirelessly to give you the kind of representation you want and need.

I am not a supporter of taxing to spend, we need to stop spending more than we are earning.

I would like to bring a fresh outlook to the assembly from a working man's perspective.

The working man/woman not in finance are struggling and cannot afford any more stealth taxes.

Please vote for change, vote Forman.

Guernsey now more than ever requires energetic, experienced, and committed Deputies, bringing fresh ideas and who are capable of fully understanding many complex issues.

I will support the ongoing initiatives that ensure our public services are run efficiently as possible, whilst ensuring that vital public services are not reduced for those who are in most need.

Our education system should enable our children to realise their potential and in turn increase both their personal and social wellbeing for the benefit of the island.

I am passionate about Guernsey and my range of experience makes me an ideal candidate to become a Deputy.

I supported the attempt by Deputy Rihoy to reduce Deputies' pay.

I laid an amendment to freeze the new Deputies' pay scales. Both attempts failed.

I would support a reduction in the number of deputies.

My energy would continue to be focussed on scrutinising all areas of expenditure to achieve optimum results at minimum cost.

All Deputies have their pet projects and aspirations.

The challenge is to deliver what our economy can afford.

Patience, realism, common sense, self-discipline and fairness must prevail.

Oscar Wilde said: "The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention."

Allister Langlois Allister Langlois

Allister Langlois: One-minute manifesto

Allister Langlois offers experience, expertise and economic management.

We need continuity and firm resolve on financial matters in order to balance the States' books.

There is no point in debating what to spend on States services if the money is not available.

Allister has experience in Treasury and Resources and as Chairman of the Public Sector Remuneration Committee.

He has run a successful advisory business for over twenty years.

Before that he was a lecturer in finance and management.

The next States faces challenges to eliminate the budget deficit.

Allister offers a prudent and balanced approach to this challenge.

Richard Lord Richard Lord

Richard Lord: One-minute manifesto

If I am elected as Deputy to St Peter Port South, I will be fair and honest and make decisions based on evidence, and in the best long-term interests of the community I serve.

Guernsey's financial services industries deserve a stable regulatory environment to provide the revenue the island depends on.

The next island government will need to cut costs but we have a social responsibility to take care of those in need.

We can off-set rising food and energy bills by reducing waste.

If elected I will work to maintain and improve the quality of life our island provides.

Jenny Tasker Jenny Tasker

Jenny Tasker: One-minute manifesto

My honesty, integrity and common sense ensure unachievable promises are not made.

Particular concerns are:

• Education - continue to improve achievements of all students in fit for purpose facilities;

• Mental health care has to be a priority;

• Expedite resolution of zero ten to ensure compliance;

• Address equality issues;

• Waste disposal methods have to be agreed;

• Population, the economy and social security matters are interlinked and we need to maintain an influence on global competitiveness and international obligations as well as encouraging local entrepreneurs;

• The culture of the States has to change to accept real accountability in all areas of its operation.
