Guernsey's new plans for bigger slaughterhouse

A bigger slaughterhouse could be built in Guernsey, if new plans from the island's Commerce and Employment department are approved.

Permission is being sought by the department to make the new building longer, wider and taller than previous plans had detailed.

The department said the increase in size was due to the dimensions of equipment needed at the facility.

It also said the slaughterhouse's budget of £2m would not increase.

A spokesman said the difference in size would not stop the facility being completed by early 2013.

The building of a new slaughterhouse was approved by the States in March.

It will be situated close to an existing cattle carcass incinerator at Longue Hougue.
