Deputy Gollop said politicians could give up to two years' pay

A Guernsey deputy has suggested docking politicians' pay in order to recoup up to £2.6m lost in fraud.

Deputy John Gollop said: "One way of recouping part or all of the money... would be members would sacrifice a proportion of their pay."

The treasury and resources minister announced on 25 July that a monthly payment, due to a construction company, had instead been paid to a third party.

The department had received a letter that said the bank details had changed.

It was realised the letter was fraudulent when Lagan Construction contacted the department to chase payment.

Deputy Gollop said members could at least give up some of the pay increase which was voted through before April's election.

"Or, to put it at its bluntest," he said, "we could give up two years' annual salary."
