Guernsey disability survey informs discrimination law decision

The results of a disability survey will be used to help decide whether or not Guernsey needs anti-discrimination legislation.

Emily Yerby, disability and equalities officer, said it was an objective of the survey to develop a disability and inclusion strategy.

The strategy is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Ms Yerby said if it highlighted discrimination issues they would need to look at how to tackle them.

She said: "If this survey shows people struggle to find employment or they struggle with their social life or they feel that they are facing bad attitudes on the part of other people then we will see there is a potential issue with discrimination."

Peter Fernandez, who cares full-time for two of his children who are disabled, has taken the survey and encouraged others to do the same.

He said: "It's about understanding that every person with special needs has different needs and obliging the States to take that into consideration."
