Guernsey kerbside recycling 'should start in 2013'

Kerbside recycling in Guernsey should be up and running by the end of next year, according to the head of the Waste Disposal Authority.

In February the States agreed to the introduction of kerbside recycling as part of moves to achieve a recycling target of 70%, to be achieved by 2025.

Deputy Public Services Minister Scott Ogier said the business case was being finalised at the moment.

He said if all went to plan the service would be up and running in 2013.

Deputy Ogier said Treasury and Resources Department would need to approve the business case before they went out to tender.

He said: "If all goes well... we'll go out to tenders early in the first half of next year and we should be up and running by the end [of the year]."

Kerbside recycling was approved as part of a waste strategy that involves the exportation of waste from the island.

The island's current strategy of landfill is expected to be sustainable until 2022.
