EU fishing reforms 'won't affect' Bailiwick of Guernsey

Guernsey fishermen are unlikely to be affected by changes to fishing quotas agreed by the European Union.

David Wilkinson, a sea fisheries officer, said the local industry would remain the same despite EU moves to protect stocks and end discards

He said the island's 12-mile limit would allow Guernsey to explore other options, rather than imposing quotas.

MEPs agreed to a major EU fishing reform on 6 February, pledging to put changes in to law by 2014.

These changes could include measures to stop overfishing, as well as stopping fishermen from discarding dead fish.
