Eighteen places 'want Guernsey's waste', says minister

Eighteen jurisdictions have expressed an interest in receiving exported waste from Guernsey, according to the island's public services minister.

Deputy Paul Luxon said talks were in progress over the shipping of waste to other areas, but that no agreement had yet been made.

He said Jersey was the preferred location, but talks with other European states were still going on.

He said any ash created by burning the waste would not return to Guernsey.

A waste strategy for Guernsey focusing on reusing and recycling was approved in 2012.

It stated that export was the preferred option for any waste that could not be re-processed.
