Guernsey builders 'not given time' to bid for project

The work to repair the sea wall will take about eight weeks, according to the environment department

Guernsey contractors should have been given more time to bid to fix the Perelle sea wall says the island's building association.

The Environment Department announced that Jersey Company Brenwall had won the contract.

The department defended its decision, saying Brenwall submitted the best tender and could start straight away.

Clive Fenner, from Guernsey's Building Trades Association, says it took too long for the tender process to start.

An Environment Department spokesman said it would take about eight weeks to repair the wall which collapsed with part of the road last year.

Deputy Environment Minister, Tony Spruce, said every effort was made to ensure local companies won States contracts.

He said: "It is not correct to say local contractors aren't winning States contract. Local contractors win probably 90% of those issued.

"There may be occasions when a local contractor doesn't win it but it is always for a good reason."

During the work Route de la Perelle will be closed between La Biloterie and Rue Perelle from 10 June.
