Alderney Electricity to be reviewed

How Alderney Electricity operates and how it could deliver energy in future will be reviewed.

The Policy Committee decided the audit was needed to ensure it had more information about the impact renewable energy would have in the future.

A previous review was carried out by an energy consultancy firm in 2008.

Robert McDowall, States nominated director of the company, said: "The time is right for a reassessment of how the company operates."

He said: "[Alderney Electricity] has often been the subject of intense scrutiny by the people of Alderney, which is understandable, and this follow-up audit will show just how far the company have come in the past five years.

"There is a draft energy consultation paper in preparation, but we need to have a better understanding of how renewable energy sources affect the future generation of electricity.

"We are close to a decision on an anaerobic digester and of course there are plans to get a cable from France as well as tidal energy in the next decade."

The committee was also told of the resignation of Mike Richards, the chairman of Alderney Electricity, for personal reasons.

The company is the only provider of electricity in the island.
