World War One to be marked in five-year celebration

Guernsey's Culture and Leisure Department has unveiled a list of events to mark the centenary of World War One.

The events will take place in the island over the next five years.

To coincide with the start of the war in August, the Philatelic Bureau will issue stamps and the Westminster Collection is minting a set of coins.

From August, Guernsey Museum at Candie will host a display showing how Guernsey responded to war breaking out.

It will also be publishing Liz Walton's book A Guernseyman Goes to War.

The National Trust's Folk & Costume Museum is holding an exhibition called Peace Before War 1900‐1914, which opens next month.

On 9 July, the Red Cross will hold a summer fete at Government House.

The Guernsey Society will also be hosting a lecture by Rory Stevens at the Frossard Theatre on 15 July.

A recital of songs and poems will be held as part of the Summer Music at Town Church on 4 August.

Other events and projects will be officially announced later.
