Guernsey States put off island-wide voting debate

A move to elect all 45 of Guernsey's States members by island-wide elections has been put off until a governmental review has been completed.

Deputy Mike Hadley led the motion calling for island-wide voting to be introduced in time for the next election in 2016.

However, Deputy Lyndon Trott said any such move needed to be considered alongside other governmental changes.

His motion to delay the debate was supported with a vote of 35 to nine.

Currently deputies are elected from seven electoral districts and the issue of island-wide voting is likely to return in July.

This will either be in a special meeting being held to discuss the recommendations of the States Review Committee or the normal monthly States meeting.
