A large wastewater pipe has been placed over a road in Guernsey as a precaution against flooding.

The pipe is a temporary measure while the existing storm outfall is disconnected from the Belle Greve Wastewater Centre.

Geomarine, the firm behind the project, said it was a precaution in case of a heavy downpour and would not be used for normal wastewater discharge.

Wastewater will be discharged using the current long sea outfall.

The pipe is 5.4 metres (17.7ft) above road level and spans a total of 18 metres (59ft) in two sections.

It will be in place for approximately three months after which it will be dismantled and removed from the site.

The short sea outfall, which is being disconnected, is only used in times of peak flow and during storms.

It is more than 100 years old and in a poor state of repair.

This will be replaced with one of two new outfalls that will be buried beneath the beach and discharged much further into the sea.
