Guernsey marks King's Coronation with gun salute

Events have been held in Guernsey to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday.

Members of the armed forces, veterans and cadets took part in a Coronation Parade from Fort George to the Model Yacht Pond earlier.

At midday a 21-gun salute sounded from Castle Cornet.

Four parish churches took part in Ring for the King during in which they rang their bells for 45 minutes.

Steve Corley, part of the safety team for the gun salute, said: "We've done so many [gun salutes]... it's always a privilege."

Meanwhile many people gathered at events to mark the Coronation.

Margaret Redhead, 71, attended the celebrations at Fort George.

She said: "I can't remember the last coronation. I'm hoping the celebration will be enjoyed by communities all over the world."

Mary-Anne Chamberlain said: "It was amazing to be part of the parade as it felt like we were marching as one whole."

A Royal Navy warship, HMS Puncher, is in St Peter Port to help mark the occasion and Liberation Day on Tuesday, with opportunities for islanders to go aboard.

The KGV community centre hosted family activities for islanders

The KGV community centre showed the Coronation on a big screen as well as hosting family activities.

Nicki Simonds, head of marketing and culture for the centre, said: "We had a bit of a soggy start... given the British weather people still come out, still dress up and embrace it and enjoy the day."

The St Martin's Community Centre held a tea party with a big screen showing the procession and ceremony.

Clare Holiday, a volunteer at the centre, said: "I find it quite exciting! I wasn't around for the Queen's coronation so I was interested to see how it would go, and I've really enjoyed it."

Rebecca Silk, operations manager, added: "We're overflowing with tea and cake for everybody! It's a massive day in history and it's lovely to celebrate it together."

The Commonwealth Society displayed a collection of patriotically decorated vintage and classic vehicles and motorbikes outside the Old Government House hotel.

In Alderney, events were being held in the Island Hall.

The Coronation Inn, which was founded in the year of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, also showed the ceremony.

In Sark, a screening was due to be held at the Island Hall.
