A new department has been opened at the GSPCA, providing a home for smaller animals.

It has moved into the space previously taken up by a charity shop which has since moved off-site.

The area has now become home to variety of reptiles, birds and small mammals, rescued by the charity.

GSCPA Manager, Steve Byrne, said it is very exciting to have the extra space and allows animal species to be kept apart.

"Small animals have never had their own department before, so it's great to have a whole section of a building with different areas which can house different things."

Mr Byrne added that the department is not just home to rescued animals.

"We've helped two snakes - one from Mexico that snuck into a suitcase and one from Spain that snuck into a suitcase - and a lizard from Madeira that snuck into a suitcase.

"We never know what we're going to get in!"
