The move to reduce funding provided to the sports commission was criticised

The States of Guernsey has agreed to fund the sports strategy until the end of the year.

It comes after the government work plan suggested reducing the funding to the Guernsey Sports Commission through the Active 8 strategy for sport, external.

The Education, Sport and Culture Committee (ESC) is to withdraw an amendment to the plan to provide about £1.5m of funding until the end of 2030.

It said it would look to find a long term funding arrangement.

The move to reduce funding provided to the sports commission was criticised by its leaders and the Health Improvement Commission which said a reduction to the grant would limit participation in local sport, external.

Jon Ravenscroft, chair of the commission, said: "The funding being proposed for the sports commission still falls some way short of what we need to be able to deliver the Active 8 workstreams in full."

He said it would mean the commission would have to rely on private funding.
