Guernsey apprentices do battle in skills competition

Six Guernsey apprentices have been in Jersey to compete in the first pan-island skills competition.

The students from TGI College competed against other apprentices from Jersey and the Isle of Man.

The teams took part in a series of timed challenges to test their skills in their chosen trade.

The event, on Friday at Highlands College, aimed to showcase the talents of young plumbers, electrical engineers and carpenters.

Ciaran Tyrell, from Jersey, won the carpentry category, with Luke Clayton from the Isle of Man coming in second.

The plumbing competition was won by Jersey's Claudiu Tabartio and Kirk Harrison from the Isle of Man was the runner up.

Juan Aratujo, from Guernsey, won the electrical category, with Liam Cadoret from Jersey second.

Chris Torode, director of apprenticeships at TGI College of Further Education, said: "This is a great collaborative initiative and the perfect opportunity for our apprentices to showcase their abilities and learn from their peers.

"As a college we are focused on ensuring that our vocational programmes develop the required skills for the island and this type of event demonstrates our commitment to giving students and apprentices the broadest range of experience possible during their programme of study."

The competition rotates between the three participating islands and is set to be hosted by University College Isle of Man in 2025.
