A review of road traffic offences will cost the States £54,000, it has revealed.

The work has been contracted to Aecom, external and the review is set to be received by the States "midway through the year".

Last year it was suggested the review could look at introducing speed cameras and driving licence penalty points.

Anita Walker, from the States Operations Team, said part of the review will look at reducing pressure on government resources.

The objectives of the review, according to the States, are:

  • Improved road safety

  • Improved proportion of speeding offences detected and collisions reported

  • Reduced court time and pressure on Police resources in the processing of low-level traffic offences

  • Improved cost effectiveness

Ms Walker said: "Following a competitive tender process, Aecom has been commissioned to carry out a review and produce a report which makes recommendations on how best to reform the management of road traffic and driver offences.

"Aecom's tender represented the best value for money. The cost of this work will be £54,000."

On its website Aecom is described as "the world's trusted infrastructure consulting firm, partnering with clients to solve the world's most complex challenges and build legacies for generations to come".

Earlier this year during a discussion on increasing the cost of parking tickets a number of deputies said they wanted to see harsher fines for some driving offences.

An attempt to limit the increase in the price of a fixed penalty notice from Deputies Chris Blin and David De Lisle was not debated by the States in January.
