States' Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services wants to finish the work before the summer

Work to improve Guernsey's Victorian bathing pools has begun.

The works - due to finish on Friday - include restoring steps, increasing the grip of surfaces and planting wildflowers.

Contractors were trying to minimise disruption, but some pools would close, the States said.

Jim Robinson, director of natural environment, said he wanted the work to be done "ahead of the summer".

The States said some areas would need to be cordoned off whilst the work was taking place.

The Ladies Pool is expected to be closed on Thursday and Friday, but the Children's Pool is due to remain open during the work.

Mr Robinson said it was "fantastic" that the historic bathing pools were used all year round.

"But that does mean that there isn't ever really a good time to carry out improvements.

"That being said, we wanted to get in ahead of the summer when we know that the pools are even busier."

He thanked users for their patience while the work was being carried out.
