Guernsey garden waste site to relocate

Islanders are being urged to compost waste at home "to divert some of the 4,000 tonnes of green waste currently taken to Chouet each year"

A household garden waste drop-off site at Chouet in Guernsey is to be moved to allow quarrying on the headland.

A new drop-off site is being created at the nearby Mont Cuet landfill site, the States of Guernsey said.

Chouet's last day of operation will be 2 April, with the new site opening the next day.

The new site will open on Sunday afternoons in the summer and two hours later on summer weekdays "to better meet customer demand", the States said.

Winter opening hours will be reduced, "closing on the days when there is historically low usage, in order to keep operating costs down", it said.

The opening hours from 3 April at Mont Cuet up to and including 26 October are:

• Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 BST (Closed Thursdays)

• Bank Holidays 10:00 - 18:00 BST

Winter opening, 27 October onwards:

• Saturday to Monday 10:00 - 16:00 GMT

Douglas Button, Guernsey waste minimisation and sustainability officer, urged islanders to compost waste at home "to divert some of the 4,000 tonnes of green waste currently taken to Chouet each year".

It would "also provide them with a lovely, nutrient rich compost, free of charge", he said.

Subsidised home composting kits were available from local garden centres for £10, he added.
