RNLI lifeguards have returned to patrol beaches in the south-west of England full-time over the Easter holidays.

A total of 23 beaches across Devon and Cornwall will be staffed until 14 April.

After Easter, lifeguards patrols would continue daily in Cornwall at on Sennen, Porthmeor, Perranporth and Fistral, the charity said.

RNLI Regional Lifeguard Lead Guy Botterill said the lifeguards were "excited to be back".

'Local beach risks'

He said: "Our lifeguards have spent the last few weeks going through inductions and training to make sure they are ready for the new season.

"If you are heading to the coast over Easter, we strongly advise going to a lifeguarded beach.

"Speak to our lifeguards for advice and information about the local beach risks, tides and weather conditions.

"'Be prepared for whatever water activity you have planned and always have a means of calling for help."

The RNLI said lifeguards in the region responded to 7,501 incidents, aided 10,398 people and saved 38 lives in 2023.

It urged anyone visiting the coast to follow beach safety advice:

  • Visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags

  • Check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage to understand local risks

  • Keep a close eye on your family - on the beach and in the water - do not allow family members to swim alone

  • Anyone who falls in the water unexpectedly should use the Float to Live advice and fight instincts to thrash around; instead they should lean back, extend their arms and legs, and float

  • In an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard

Daily patrols across the remaining beaches would commence on 4 May, with weekend coverage only taking place in during the second half of April, the charity said.
