Isle of Man special constables to get sick pay

  • Published

Special constables in the Isle of Man who are injured while on duty will be entitled to claim sick pay, under new rules approved by Tynwald.

The specials are trained volunteers who work with regular police officers.

The regulations mean they can claim an allowance if they lose earnings from their day jobs due to an injury received while serving the police.

The regulations come into operation on 1 November and follow similar allowances available in the UK.

Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw MHK said: "As far as the Department is aware there has not been any incident involving injury to a Special Constable that has prevented them working in their main employment.

"However, it is a positive move that the Department will have the ability to provide an allowance to Special Constables if they lose wages for their main employment following an injury sustained while undertaking police duties."

The regulations were approved in Tynwald this week.
