Kitterland is a breeding ground for grey seals

Police have issued a warning after a seal colony on Kitterland island, south of the Isle of Man, was disturbed.

The small island lies between the Sound and the Calf of Man and has become a popular breeding ground for grey seals.

Police believe the colony was disturbed by people going on to Kitterland during the weekend of 16 and 17 October, causing distress to the animals.

Pc Ian Scott said: "Seals are protected under The Wildlife Act from intentional or reckless disturbance."

He added: "These animals should not be approached - this is especially relevant now as seals are giving birth to pups and there may well be dependent young within any seal colony."

Anyone with information to help with the police investigation is asked to contact Peel police station.
